A very rare denier of Baldwin II of Bourcq
Lot 6014
CRUSADERS. Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Baldwin II of Bourcq, 1118-1131. Denier (Silver, 19 mm, 0.93 g, 3 h), Akka (Acre), circa 1130. NOMETA (sic!) REGIS Large patriarchal cross within pelleted circle, flanked by Α and Ⲱ. Rev. ✠ REX NERILM (sic!) Cross pattée within pelleted circle. CCS 52. Metcalf, Crusades, 146. Wäckerlin -. Very rare and unusually well preserved. Nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of J. F. L. Blankenberg, Elsen 150, 18 March 2022, 126 and ex Baldwin 52, 25 September 2007, 1447.

The excellent style and fabric of this issue help place this coin in the first half of the 12th century, before the hastily produced issues of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem rapidly start deteriorating in their appearance. The letters Α and Ⲱ, famously describing Christ in the Book of Revelation, point to the city of Akka, the seal of which also contained these letters.
